Oobleck Writing

After reading Bartholemew and the Oobleck, we made our own Oobleck out of corn starch, water, and food coloring. As the teacher was making it, the children were writing about each step on the organizer. We have been practicing paragraphs, so this is a perfect how-to paragraph.

Step 1: First, pour the corn starch into the bowl.
Step 2: Next, pour a little water in at a time until it makes a moist consistency and mix.
Step 3: Last, add a little food coloring.

After we wrote our rough draft out, we had an editing time and corrected mistakes. Last, I took my class to the computer lab to type out their paragraphs.

The Lorax

After reading The Lorax, the children had a writing assignment to complete. "If I were The Lorax, this is how I would save the Earth..." We also made this cute little Lorax paper plate craft with it.

Dr. Seuss

We read Dr. Seuss's What Pet Should I Get? We used this graphic organizer to form an opinion about which pet they would get if they had a choice. We have had one lesson on writing a paragraph and this would lead in perfectly for writing another one. We discussed that the topic sentence and concluding sentence should state the same thing, just change the words around a bit.

After we made our organizer, we wrote a rough draft of our paragraphs.

The children then got to take their paragraphs to the computer lab to type out. They were so proud of themselves!

Dr. Seuss's ABC Book

After reading Dr. Seuss's ABC: An Amazing Alphabet Book, we talk about beginning sounds. I assign each child a letter and they brainstorm words that begin with that letter. Then they think of some of those words that could go together to make a phrase or sentence. They can then draw a picture of their sentence. Allow children to get kind of silly; after all, it is Dr. Seuss!
Put the class book in the classroom library so children can read it anytime.

Dr. Seuss

Our addition unit was the same week as Dr. Seuss week, so after reading One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish we did this addition activity.

Graphing our favorite Dr. Seuss books. I like doing graphs using the children's pictures. You can discuss math words, such as most, least, and equal.

Teacher-directed art lesson. Start with doing the painted hands the day before so it can dry. With one hand, paint red stripes on the fingers for the cat's hat and put it on the top center of the paper. With the other hand, paint blue on the fingers and do it on both sides of the paper for Thing 1 and Thing 2's hair.

Rhyming hat- Differentiate by having higher students come up with a 5 rhyming word set. Other students can come up with 2 words that rhyme and write them in the two white stripes.

Flipbook- Fun way to identify the story elements of a book. Sheet of white, sheet of red, and another half sheet of red for middle. Staple at top after you Fold them staggerdly.
